வேல் | Vel

இதில் ஒன்று அசல், மற்றொன்று எதிரி உருவாக்கிய போலி. நம் எதிரி முருகனின் வேலை போர் ஆயுதம் என்று திரிப்பான். இதை முருகன் எய்தால் உடலின் ஒரு முனையில் பாய்ந்து மறு முனையில் வரும் என்பான். எய்தவுடன் அது மீண்டும் கைக்கு வரும் என்றும் கதைவிடுவான்.

நமது மரபு யாதெனில் வேல் எந்தவொரு சிலையின் கையிலும் இருக்காது. தனித்திருக்கும். மண்ணில் செங்குத்தாக நடப்பட்டிருக்கும். இவ்வேல் பெரும்பாலும் வெட்டவெளிகளில் அமைந்த குலதெய்வ வழிபாட்டுத்தலங்களிலேயே காணப்படும். வேலுக்குக் கீழுள்ள கழுத்தில் ஒரு தடுப்பு போன்ற நீண்ட பட்டை இருக்கும். அதில் ஒரு அலங்காரத்துக்காய் சில மணிகளைத் தொங்கவிட்டிருப்பார்கள்.

வேலுக்குக் கீழ் இந்தப் பட்டை வைப்பதன் நோக்கம் உடலின் ஒரு பக்கத்தில் பாய்ந்து மறுபக்கம் வெளியே வராது என்பதைக் காட்டவும், இது போருக்கான ஆயுதமோ உடலைத் துளைப்பதற்கான ஆயுதமோ அல்ல என்பதை முன்னோர்களுக்கு உணர்த்தவுமே.

இந்த நடப்பட்ட வேலின் நுனியில் சேவலைக் குத்தி எடுத்து வழிபாடு செய்யும் உண்மையான முன்னோர் வழிபாடு சென்ற 2 தலைமுறைக்கு முன்பு வரைகூட தமிழகத்தில் சிறப்பாக இருந்திருக்கிறது.

One of these is original and the other one is fake, created by the enemy. They'll say Murugan's vel is a weapon of war and if he throws the vel, it will pierce the body in one and comes out in the other end. They'll even say the vel will comes back to his hand once thrown.

Our real tradition is that vel won't be in the hands of any idol. Placed vertically in a separate place. It usually would be placed in an open area (outdoor) near our Tutelary & Family Deity temples. There will be a quite long bar below the sharp piece of vel and some bells would be hanged for decoration.

The purpose of the bar below the vel is to indicate that vel is neither a war weapon nor it can pierce the body from one end to the other end.

The real ancestor worship in which a rooster will stabbed in the vel for sacrificial offering is being greatly practiced in Tamil Nadu until two generations ago.

Let's go back to our ancestor worship!
